Undergraduate Curriculum

In this undergraduate curriculum, in order to produce Japanese experts, we run the curriculum in accordance with the following principles. First, we foster communicative abilities that can further the linguistic ability, which is a basic ability in Japanese Studies, and understanding of Japan. Second, we strive for a practical education in Japanese history, society, economics, culture, and art. Third, we build a foundation for long-term, sustainable development by establishing networks in and outside of Korea. Strengthening ties with external agencies inside and outside of Korea can achieve this effect.

Based on these three basic tenets, we have designed a comprehensive student career development path, which sets objectives each year of instruction in both the student's curriculum and student counseling, and which assigns professors roles in student counseling. The student career development path is composed of two aspects: the curriculum and student counseling. For the curricular aspect, we set teaching the Japanese language and studies focused on usage and user as the basic strategic direction. For the counseling aspect, we set invigoration of group activities related to education and employment. Furthermore, we set minimal goals and standards required per year/area.

In the student's first year, she submits self-development plan report in the program. This report includes learning and self-development plans, and future career path, and should undergo the counseling professor's counseling results. In the student's second year, the goal of the curriculum is to achieve the second level Japanese proficiency examination; the student is recommended to join at least one student organization or do volunteer work. In the third year, the goal is to achieve first level Japanese proficiency (or JPT score of 800); we lead third year students to take active roles in global exchange programs, or the exchange student or dual degree programs. By the time that they graduate through these courses, they reach the level of expertise in Japanese Studies and meet the basic conditions for employment.
