<Prospect>

With the increase of interest in health, many health-related facilities such as fitness clubs, aerobics classes, and general sports centers are being established almost everywhere near large apartment complexes, private residences and multiplex houses.
Accordingly, the number of job vacancies for public sports instructors is expected to increase. Instructors can work in the facilities and groups specified above or they can independently open their own classes, institutes or fitness clubs.

<Process>

In order to obtain a public sports instructor license, the candidate must pass the qualification exam organized by the Korea Sports Science Institute affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. To be eligible to sit for the qualification exam, candidates must complete the course provided by the institute.
The instructor license is classified into three levels (Level 1*2*3) and the courses of the institute are distinguished into three levels accordingly. In order to register for the course, in the case of Level 3, candidates with experience in fields related with physical education in a 4-year university will be tested based on the field of specialty or major in a 1:1 game. For the Level 2 course, candidates who graduated physical education related fields from a 4-year university or candidates who have a minimum of 3 years of experience as a researcher or a director/instructor in the administration of physical education will be tested 1:1 in a field of specialty or major and in 2 sub-major fields. Candidates training in Level 2 must complete 144 Hours, and candidates in Level 3 must complete 50 Hours of training to be eligible to sit for the qualification exam.
There are several ways of working as a public sports instructor without obtaining a license.
Firstly, there is a program organized by the Korea Society Sports Center affiliated to the Sports Council, YMCA and other public organizations, through which the organizations employ specialists of physical education as volunteers so as to cultivate future sports instructors. Volunteers have the opportunity of being selected.
Youth Leaders Club (YLC) is a voluntary directing club in the Korea Society Sports Center in which 180 students of the College of Physical Education in Seoul-Incheon districts volunteer for 4 years throughout their term university students. Students volunteer with course assistive tasks or act as event staff. They are employed as sports directors or instructors after graduation through a simple interview when vacancies need to be filled. To become a member of YLC, students must take an easy practical test.
Furthermore, a person may work as a public sports instructor without obtaining a license if the relevant person is a professional athlete or if the person has experience working as a sports instructor with outstanding practical skills in a field of sports.

Prospect

<Institute>

These days, the demand for professional recreation instructors is increasing owing to the need of a safe leisure culture for groups that want leisure activities. Recreation instructors are now vital at group events and parties. However, it is recommended that people should wait until this industry shows greater possibilities for the future as the economy is unstable at the moment. This does not apply to those who believe they have the right talent and skills or the money…if they don't mind obtaining the license for preparative reasons

<Process>

To obtain the recreation instructor's license, candidates must pass the qualification exam organized by the Korea Society of Leisure Recreation. There are two ways of becoming familiar with the techniques in this field.
  • 1) Regular Education: Candidates may learn recreation skills by attending 4-year or vocational college and majoring in Public Physical Education or Recreation. The curriculum of Public Physical Education has a strong influence on recreation, and the Dept. of Recreation is established at Seoil Vocational School (2-year Course) and Myongji College (1-year Course).
  • 2) Recreation Instructor Training Institutes: The Korea Society of Leisure Recreation is the representative institute that cultivates recreation instructors. This 6-week course costs about 150,000 KRW and provides education on dance routines, music, speech methods, game recreation, etc.
    At the YMCA, there is a short 1-month course which trains students for 2 Hours 30 Minutes a day, 3 times a week. Those who complete this course may receive further training while working as an assistive instructor in the Recreation Dept. of the YMCA. The course is free of charge and further training includes working as an unpaid assistive instructor. Other than the specified, courses for recreation instructor training are available at the Korea Recreation Instructors Center, Central Recreation Skills Development Research Institute, Donga Culture Center and Central Culture Center.
