Purpose

The study of library and information science is an exploration of form, production, behavior, and communication of information science. The purpose is to produce female information experts who can contribute to many different fields in the 21st century information society, who hone their skills through studying the history, theoretical research, and practicing in the field of library & information science. Specific objectives to achieve this purpose are as follows.

Objectives

1. We produce practical experts on information through research and practical training in most advanced information technology.

2. We foster qualities of subject matter experts through scholarly research to process various information and literature, and through its application.
3. By studying the management of libraries and information centers, the requirements and status of information users, we foster qualities required of the knowledge information manager.

Recommended Affiliated Studies

Because the field of library & information science encompasses information content of all areas, we need to have an ample amount of and a good depth of knowledge in all areas; however, it is more appropriate to choose an area of fun and interest as a double major and study that particular area in depth to become a subject matter expert in that area. This is because one cannot be a subject matter expert in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences without having knowledge in those fields. Furthermore, we recommend completing basic computer classes that include the engineering theory behind the information system’s design and operation and specific technological study.

Curriculum

The curriculumn of Library & Information Science consists of two aspects: information and usage. From the information perspective, we offer courses in the organization of information based on humanity’s knowledge base; the nature and development of all archival forms, including multimedia, production and communication of knowledge, and electronic publishing; methods for establishing technology information centers and databases, which act as the aggregate of information; systems for evaluation and management operation; knowledge of and access to various information sources, including Internet information sources; development and operation of effective information search systems; and information search methods. From the perspective of usage, we offer courses in analyzing user information requirements for effective information service; status of information use per subject matter; and teaching methodology used in reading instruction or use of academic information.

Practical Training Equipment

The study of library & information science can only be effective when theoretical studies and practical training are combined. The practical training room, built in 1998, can house 40 students at a time, and is equipped with advanced communication devices, including high-performance multimedia PCs, digital publication equipment (Mac’s), and various software and CD databases. These are always available for students in this major, so that they may study or complete assignments at anytime. This room was renovated in 2007 with the funds raised in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the department in 2006.

Major Events

General Council

the highest decision-making body in the Student Council, collects opinions from students in the department. In March, the Department of Library & Information Science hosts a general council meeting and welcoming event for first-year students. In November, there is an end-of-semester general council meeting and an election to choose the next year's president. The president is in her third year of college

Execute Committee

a decision-making body composed of representatives from each year. The term for the representative is one year.

MT's

we have two MT's twice a year. The first semester MT is focused on academic trips related to the major, and the second semester MT focuses on relationship building among students

Symposiums

Held in November, the symposium has student presentations and invitation talks by senior-level students.

Taedong Festival

During Sookmyung's annual Taedong Festival in May, we run a stall to advertise the Department of Library & Information Science and raise funds.

Study Group

We form small study groups related to the major and English, which are supported by the department

Department Group and Club

we offer various information on the field of library & information science as well as opportunities to meet & greet with senior-level students.
