Career after Graduation

Because graduates receive a librarian license upon graduation, many of our graduates serve as librarians at national or public libraries, and college libraries. Also, because we recommend completing double majors (or minors), many other students studying different majors can get the librarian license after taking library & information science classes; they may also become librarians or teacher librarians. Many graduates advance into information centers, including research centers, large corporations, consulting companies, media and broadcasting companies, hospitals, and into knowledge communication companies, such as information service companies, various software development companies, publishers and large bookstores. Furthermore, many graduates become instructors at academies and culture centers, teaching book reading, information search, electronic publishing, and computer science. Especially in the field of information service consulting and electronic publishing, these women have chance to manage businesses or work as freelancers. Based on their ability and interests, students may start their own venture business or go into graduate school to become researchers or pursue professorships.

Graduates in the Major: Second-level librarian license → professional librarians at various agencies and data centers

- Librarians usually advance to national and public libraries, college libraries, professional libraries, school libraries, and so on. National and public librarians or college libraries usually use open hiring as a principle. Because national and public library librarians are public officials, they are hired after competing public examinations run by local governments or city and provincial offices of education.

- Private libraries and corporate research centers have their own hiring practices. They typically hire after on-paper evaluation, written exams, and interviews.

Graduates in the Teacher Preparation Program: attain teacher librarian license → teacher librarian at various agencies

- After attaining the license, in order to work at national and public schools, graduates must pass the open teacher certification examination. For private schools, upon receiving recommendation or going through an open hiring process, the applicant is hired after the principal's request and the executive board's decision.

- The teacher librarian position allows for autonomous instruction tailored to students' interests and abilities. The teacher librarian can experiment with creative and diverse teaching methods, including book reading instruction and library studies.

- After being hired as a teacher, the graduate may attain higher licenses (first level registered teacher license), may be promoted to professional educator, vice principal or principal.

Archival Studies: archive researcher, archivist

Electronic publishing: Publication planning and production, editing (in conjunction with electronic publishing)

- Through practical training with publishing graphic programs for electronic publishing editing and design, and by understanding of the overall process of electronic publishing, graduates may be hired by publishing companies.

Alumni advice

ㆍSoon-Young Jo, Head of the Korea Education and Research Information Service (1980 graduate)

It is important to sensitively respond to any changes and overcome those challenges and to foresee the future. The ability to acquire the most value from all information is required. Work and learning always go hand in hand. Always strive to fully understand the information market by combining theory with practice.

ㆍJeong-Mi Son, Head librarian at the Ansan City Library (1984 Graduate)

Because the field of library and information science deals with all subjects, it is at the top of all studies. This is also the reason why our study exists. We should become providers of much information, like walking encyclopedias, who can provide the necessary information in a timely manner. Also, devote effort to build a solid technical foundation to work in the virtual realm.

ㆍJin-Hee Kim, Daewoo Information System (1988 Graduate)

In this field, balanced study is necessary. Because it is about organizing knowledge or information, we need to see things from the perspective of organization. Also, because the field of library & information science is not limited to the library; always study hard because you may be required to showcase your skills in other areas as well.
